Initial improvement can also be attributed to detoxification and/or generally improved hydration by simply drinking more water. Finally, alkaline water is often associated with a higher mineral concentration, which is known to have beneficial effects, especially when overall food intake is low.

A water molecule (H2O) consists of oxygen and hydrogen. In the liquid, these particles are present in a dissociated form (from the Latin dissociare = to separate), namely as H+ and OH- ions.

The water molecule dissociates (from the Latin dissociare = to separate) into a hydrogen ion (H+) and a hydroxide ion (OH-):

H2O = H+ + OH-

These ions have certain properties: The hydrogen ions (H+, ions with a positive charge) act as an acid, the hydroxide ions (OH-, ions with a negative charge) act as a base. In pure water, these ions are present in the same concentration at 25 °C, i.e. in a ratio of 1:1. The pH value is 7, so the water is neutral.

If this ratio changes, the pH value also changes:

According to the definition of pH, the hydroxide ion (OH-) is present in higher concentrations in alkaline water, but it is not a biological antioxidant. The actual active ingredient discussed in ionized water is clearly dissolved molecular hydrogen gas (H2).

People unfamiliar with chemistry often use the terms hydroxyl and hydroxide interchangeably - even though they are completely different chemical species. The hydroxide ion is not radical reactive because it contains stable paired electrons.

The FDA recommends only 500-1000 ml per day. Excessive drinking can cause ulcers, gastrointestinal disorders, skin rashes and dizziness.

The misconception is often that acidic foods or water are considered oxidizing and alkaline foods or water are considered antioxidant. This raises the question of what about ascorbic acid (vitamin C), which is both an acidic substance and an antioxidant. In fact, most fruits with a high antioxidant content are quite acidic (pH 1-5).

The fact is that the pH value and free radicals involve two different chemical processes. One is acid-base chemistry, the other is oxidation-reduction chemistry.

In summary, the following can be said: If something is acidic, this means that it has a higher concentration of H+ ions.

Basically, it is important to understand that if we drink alkaline water for several weeks, we can change our own pH value in the stomach. Water is only ever a weakly buffered acid or base. Its pH value therefore changes very easily and very quickly according to the pH value of the environment it enters.

The first environment that water enters after drinking is the stomach. The pH value there is between 1.0 and 1.5. If a lot of alkaline water is drunk, this can buffer the stomach acid. This can lead to the stomach producing more stomach acid. This can result in digestive problems and heartburn, among other things.

The task of modern water research is to develop devices that correct the values of tap water through treatment and return it to the "milieu of health" (≥ 6000 Ohm, 24-28 rH2, pH 6.4-6.8).

According to the laws of human metabolism, water does not have the task of alkalizing the body's environment through high pH values. This effect is caused by metabolic reactions that produce alkaline-forming foods (which, however, have an acidic pH value per se). They promote an environment in which metabolic waste products such as uric acid dissolve more easily.

Water, on the other hand, has a transport and cleansing function in the body. If the ohmic resistance of water is below 6000 ohms, its osmotic ability to load itself with metabolic waste products (dissolved from the tissue) is close to zero.

It is recommended that you only drink alkaline water for a maximum of 2-3 weeks. As with any cure, it is important to understand that short intervals benefit the body the most.

It is also important to understand that fruit and vegetables have an alkaline effect, but have a maximum pH value of around 7 and not - like alkaline water - over 8.

A classic example is the lemon: although it is strongly acidic in taste and has a low pH value, it is considered to have an alkalizing effect on the metabolism. This is because its organic acids - especially citrate - can be metabolized in the body to form bicarbonate, which has a metabolic alkalizing effect.

However, this has nothing to do with the artificially increased pH value caused by ionizers.

It is important to note that just because something has a high ORP (negative or positive) does not mean that a reaction is actually taking place. Just like in the illustration with the ball at the top of a hill, it has the "potential" to roll down the hill. But something must first give the ball the initial "push" (this is called activation energy (Ea)). If the required activation energy is too high, the reaction may never take place.

It is also important to note that a negative ORP does not automatically mean that a physiological antioxidant value is present. The decisive factor is the chemical species responsible for generating the ORP value, which determines whether a biological antioxidant effect is actually possible or not.

For example, a negative ORP can be generated by adding vitamin C, molecular hydrogen or aluminum to the water. However, only vitamin C and molecular hydrogen have known physiological benefits. Aluminum, on the other hand, can even act as an oxidizing agent and cause exactly the opposite of what is intended.

This must be taken into account for many commercial products.

The decisive question should therefore be:

"Which chemical species is responsible for generating the negative ORP and does it have a physiological value?"

This misconception probably stems from the following four perspectives: The common fallacy that antioxidants are negative while free radicals are positive, combined with the fact that hydroxide (OH-) has a negative charge. Alkaline ionized water has a high pH and therefore contains more hydroxide (OH-) ions, which are negatively charged. Alkaline ionized water has a negative oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) and has antioxidant activity. The fact that molecular hydrogen (H2) was not recognized as the reason for the -ORP, antioxidant activity and therapeutic effect until around 2007 means that ionized water was introduced to the market decades before H2 was detected. It is also worth considering what would happen if hydroxide (OH-) acted as an antioxidant and donated an electron. It would turn into the most cytotoxic oxygen radical: the hydroxyl radical (OH).

Understanding the pH value

The concept of the acidity or alkalinity of your body - or water - is based on the pH scale. What is pH? It is simply a measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions. In fact, the acronym "pH" stands for "potentia hydrogenii", or "strength of hydrogen".

The higher the pH value of a liquid, the fewer free hydrogen ions (H +) it has; the lower the pH value, the more free hydrogen ions (H +) are present. One pH unit reflects a tenfold change in the ion concentration, so that at a pH value of 7 there are ten times as many hydrogen ions available as at a pH value of 8.

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14 and a pH value of 7 is neutral. Anything with a pH value below 7 is considered acidic, and anything with a pH value above 7 is alkaline (or basic).

The real reason why alkaline water does not work as advertised is because it does not contain buffers to maintain its pH. Once the alkaline water hits your very acidic stomach, the pH is neutralized because there are no buffers. Truly alkaline water would have an alkaline buffer like baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), which is also our body's natural alkaline buffer.

Some have claimed that when the alkaline water is neutralized by the stomach acid, the bicarbonate ions are released into the blood and thus have an alkalizing effect. This would be the case if the alkaline water effectively neutralized all of the stomach acid (like baking soda), but alkaline water does not neutralize any significant amount of stomach acid; the stomach acid completely neutralizes the alkaline water. So there is no "net alkalizing effect".

The natural water on our planet has a pH value of between 6.5 and 8.5, depending on soil and vegetation, seasonal fluctuations and weather conditions, as well as the time of day, which reacts to sunlight. Human activities also affect the pH of our water as toxic industrial pollutants are released.
